I may be one of the few in the AI space who discusses Generative AI in a more limited and measured way. Why? While Generative AI is potentially powerful and grabbed everyone’s attention, it’s not something you should apply everywhere. In my articles, posts, interviews, and conversations, I often avoid focusing solely on it, preferring to paint a fuller picture of what AI can offer. At the same time, I try to educate on this. I feel this mirrors the situation when people began thinking of AI beyond automation, asking if AI could solve problems without truly understanding whether AI was necessary.
The chaos around this technology isn’t all bad. At least, it has put AI in the spotlight and introduced many to AI and its potential. Whether the understanding is accurate can be debatable. However, amidst all this excitement, I suggest everyone step back and take a more rounded view of the broader AI landscape.
The danger is that too many industry leaders and organizations are running after Generative AI without fully understanding it or considering other AI technologies that better suit their needs. It’s concerning to hear bold claims that may mislead people. Many discussions are speculative (not saying it’s wrong to do that), but few have demonstrated tangible outcomes. In fact, I suggest organizations appoint AI experts in leadership positions where relevant. You can not run AI with a mindset that gets blown away by anything or everything new that is coming. Prepare a proper assessment and strategy, including a fall back plan.
The reality is that AI is a vast field, with many solutions beyond Generative AI that can solve complex challenges more effectively. Don’t get into FOMO Trap; instead, reach out to genuine experts who can provide clear, insightful guidance.
As someone involved in strengthening India’s AI ecosystem through various national programs, I’ve witnessed firsthand how AI is evolving across sectors, and felt leaders dilema and many a time over excitement.
AI success also lies in picking the right tools for specific problems. Generative AI has its place as one of the tool in a larger toolbox. Let’s not overlook the bigger picture in rush to adopt the latest trend.
While chaos may spark initial curiosity, there’s so much more to explore, and it’s important to develop your understanding of AI holistically—not just through the lens of what’s trending.
Let’s be realistic, strategic, and informed. Generative AI is one, not the entire solution. The real power lies in integrating many technologies, even if you say traditional AI and gen AI together.
